Illustration for How to spot duplicate charges and unusual transactions

A double charge or a payment you do not recognise is easy to miss in a long statement. Two checks catch most of them: look for repeats, and look for amounts far from normal.

Repeats

Duplicates usually come from a payment terminal retrying, a pending charge posting twice or a payment submitted again. The test is simple: the same account, the same merchant and the same amount within a day or two. The Possible duplicate charges report in the Report library applies exactly that test and lists each pair with its dates.

Amounts far from normal

Every category has a usual size. A restaurant bill of ₹28,000 among meals that usually cost ₹500 to ₹1,800 stands out. The Outlier transactions report compares each expense with the average for its category, measured in standard deviations, and lists those that are far above it. A score of 3 means the expense is three standard deviations above the category’s average.

What to do when you find one

  1. Check the merchant’s own app or email for a receipt or order.
  2. If the charge is wrong, contact the merchant first, then your bank or card issuer.
  3. Ask your bank how long you have to dispute a transaction, because the time limits vary.
  4. Keep the statement line, any receipts and your messages as evidence.

Make it a habit

Import statements as soon as you download them and open these two reports. It takes a couple of minutes, and a problem caught early is much easier to fix.
